David Abel

Chairman, VerdeXchange Institute

David Abel is the founding chairman and managing director of VerdeXchange, LLC—an environmental think tank, publisher, and clean and green technology event host (VerdeXchange.org). The Institute was created to inform and strategically advise green economy innovators wishing to diffuse global green technology and innovations in the California and Western States’ marketplace. Mr. Abel also founded in 1980 a California-based public policy consulting firm, ABL, Incorporated, which is engaged in foundation, civic and public affairs. The firm publishes The Planning Report, which focuses on land use issues in Southern California, and Metro Investment Report, which covers public infrastructure investments; and the Verdexchange News, which focused on clean energy and green innovative technologies.

Mr. Abel presently serves on a number of boards, including: the executive board of Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, and LAEDC’s Green Economy Committee, which he co-chairs; Los Angeles Education Partnership, and the New Village Charter School. He also is a lecturer on regionalism at University of California, San Diego; a former member of both the Board of Advisors of USC’s Bedrosian Center on Governance & the Public Enterprise and Occidental College President’s Advisory Board.

Mr. Abel formerly served on the corporate boards of both SuperShuttle International and Western Water Company; and in a civic capacity, as Chairman of the Los Angeles County Economy & Efficiency Commission; the California Center for Regional Leadership; and the board of directors of both CALSTART and Project Restore. He also formerly served on the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of the L.A. County Fire Department and as a member of the Independent Review Panel – Finance Options of the Bay Delta Authority. He also has served by appointment and was chairman of State Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg’s Blue Ribbon Commission to Consider Reforms of California’s Initiative Process; served on Speaker Hertzberg’s Commission on Regionalism; and, was chair of former Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa’s Commission on State/Local Government Finance Reform.

Mr. Abel has degrees from Claremont McKenna College (BA Economics); Occidental College (MA Urban Studies), Harvard Graduate School of Education (CAS and Ed.D. (ABT)); and he studied at the London School of Economics. He is married to architect Brenda Levin, FAIA and has a son, Eliot, working at GE Energy in their Renewal Energy Leadership Program.
